Nasa will release the first sound from Mars, a video of the landing



The three-minute, 25-second, high-definition video clip shows a red-and-white parachute with a 70.5-foot-wide (21.5-meter-wide) canopy.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. space agency Nasa released the first sound from Mars on Monday, a weak crackling recording of a gust of wind captured by a Perseverance driver.

Nasa also released the first video of the driver’s landing last week, tasked with looking for signs of past life on the Red Planet.

The microphone did not work when the driver landed on the surface, but it was able to capture sound as it landed on Mars.

Nasa engineers played a 60-second recording.

“What you hear there in 10 seconds is a real gust of wind on the surface of Mars that the microphone has picked up and sent back to us here on Earth,” said Dave Gruel, a leading engineer in the camera and microphone system, about perseverance.

It shows that the heat shield falls as it protects perseverance as it enters the atmosphere of Mars and the driver’s contact in a cloud of dust in the crater of Jezero, just north of the Red Planet’s equator.

“This is the first time we’ve ever been able to capture an event like landing on Mars,” said Michael Watkins, director of NASA’s jet engine laboratory leading the operation.

“These are really great videos,” Watkins said. “We watched them all weekend.”

Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s science chief, said the video of Perseverance’s landing is “mostly when you get to land on Mars without putting on a pressure suit.”

‘DEPLOYMENT IS HEALTHY’

Jessica Samuels, surface tour director at Perseverance, said the driver was performing as expected so far and its systems and instruments were being inspected intensively by engineers.

“I am happy to report that perseverance is healthy and will continue to operate as designed,” Samuels said.

He said the team prepared for the flight with the driver’s small helicopter drones, called ingenuity.

“The team is still evaluating,” he said. “We haven’t locked the site yet.”

Ingenuity is trying its first motor flight on another planet, and it must achieve an ascent in an atmosphere that is only one percent of the density of the earth.

Perseverance was launched on July 30, 2020 and landed on the surface of Mars on Thursday.

Its main mission will last a little over two years, but it will likely work well beyond that. Its predecessor, Curiosity, continues to operate for eight years after landing on Mars.

In the years to come, Perseverance will try to collect 30 rock and soil samples in sealed tubes that will be sent back to Earth sometime in the 2030s for laboratory analysis.

About the size of an SUV, the boat weighs a ton, is equipped with a seven-foot robotic arm, has 19 cameras, two microphones and a set of high-end instruments.

Mars was warmer and wetter in the distant past, and while previous studies have shown that the planet was habitable, the task of perseverance is to determine if it was actually inhabited.

It will begin drilling the first samples in the summer, and along the way it will introduce new instruments to search for organic matter, map the chemical composition, and settle on rocks to study the steam.

One experiment uses an instrument that can convert oxygen to Mars primarily from a carbon dioxide atmosphere, just like a plant.

The idea is that people will ultimately not have to carry their own oxygen on hypothetical future voyages, which is crucial for rocket fuel and respiration.

Rover is only the Fifth to have landed his bike on Mars. The show was first made in 1997, and all of them have been American.

The United States is preparing for a final human operation on the planet, although planning is still very preliminary.
