JOHANNESBURG – He has been the shoulder to shout, a counselor and friend to many strangers on social media, magazines and radio for years, and now South Africans are starting to help Dr. Sindi Van Zyl.

A dear doctor who became popular on Twitter for providing medical and non-medical advice has been admitted to a hospital in Johannesburg for more than a month after COVID-19 infection.

As funds run out and hospital bills pile up, her husband Marinus Van Zyl has urged those she has made a positive impact to do everything they can to cover her bill, which is currently around R2 million.

“The cost to the family … has already exceeded a million Rand, and the funds are running out,” Van Zyl said on a fundraising page set up to achieve the goal.

“He has suffered many complications related to ICU’s long stay, and we need more funds to pay for his continued hospitalization until his lungs survive without a ventilator. We will use all the funds raised to pay hospital bills to allow Dr. Sindi to survive.”

Van Zyl said the cost of being in the ICU alone is as high as 200,000 RW a week, and more than 1.5 million RUs are already being paid to cover other costs.

The donated funds will go to Van Zyl’s family business called Khaya.

At the time of writing, more than 500,000 RH had been collected toward the R2 million target.
