Why a big price tag? According to Heritage Auctions, part of it was related to a case behind an unused hanging tab combined with only the fourth version of the game ever produced.
“Because the production window for this copy and others like it was so short, finding another copy from the same production unit under similar conditions would be like finding a single drop of water in the sea,” Valarie McLeckie, a video game expert at Heritage, said. Associated Press. It’s a pretty big call.
The result is particularly shocking given the previous record Super Mario Bros. was a weak $ 114,000 – returned in July last year. Still, it’s not bad for a game that wouldn’t have cost more than $ 100 when it was first released in 1985.
“[The video game] I stayed at the bottom of my desk all the time from the day I bought it, ”the salesman told Heritage Auctions New York Post. “I’ve never thought of anything about it.”
