Days after Home Minister Amit Shah wanted Hindi to be the common language of the country, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Monday that India's many languages are not its weakness.

"Many languages in India are not his weaknesses," Gandhi said in a tweet, listing 23 Indian languages.

Congress leader Rajiv Shukla told a news conference that Hindi is the official language of India that we "want to educate", but that regional languages should also be encouraged.

Language should not be fought, he said.

“Hindi is still growing, which is what we all want, but putting pressure on doing something is not a good idea to use this topic just for the ballot.

The congress on Saturday said that the three-language formula should not be tolerated and that disputes should not be spread over "emotional" issues resolved by constitutional decision-makers.
