British scientists who are in contact with Oxford University require a red meat tax. The introduction of such a tax could benefit healthcare in many countries, they claim. Scientists estimate that by 2020 about 2.4 million deaths worldwide are due to red blood cell consumption. It also provides $ 285 billion of public health costs. He published his research in the scientific journal Plos One.
In co-operation with the United States and United Kingdom research centers, they sought to achieve optimal tax on meat from red meat in 149 countries to cover possible healthcare costs as much as possible. Globally, they reach the desired 16% average red blood cell rate and in Western countries, which should be 20%. The rate of processed meat products should be much higher. The optimum tax rate for red meat would amount to about $ 172 billion globally, thus covering 70 percent of the damages that the consumption of meat products costs to society.
In their research, scientists have focused mainly on the consequences for public health, but they also indirectly mention the effects on carbon dioxide emissions in their publication. Taxation would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tonnes, mainly due to a decline in beef.
