Samsung introduces folding smartphone – WSJ

, suffering from the handset's sales stand, revealed a folding smartphone that folds like a book and opens into a tablet.

On Wednesday, at a developer's show event, Samsung said the phone, which would be 7.3 inches, would be ready for mass production in the coming months. There is another, smaller screen on the outside – which it called a cover window – allowing users to check their emails and perform other core tasks when closing.

Samsung, which supplies one out of five phones worldwide, looks at a splash device that will help boost sales when consumers keep their phones longer and cheaper Chinese subscribers will gain. Last week, the world's largest smartphone maker reported that its third-quarter operating profit fell by a third.

Global smartphone deliveries declined by 8 per cent in the third quarter of September last year, in the fourth quarter, due to the strategy's analysis that the industry was "actually downgrading". Samsung's deliveries declined by another 13%.

The Wall Street Journal reported in July that Samsung developed a folding display device designed for publishing at the beginning of next year.

As the final design is still over, the South Korean Technology giant showed a folding screen that it calls "Infinity Flex" light dimmed. Justin Denison, Samsung's vice president of Samsung's mobile product marketing, prototyped how the phone could open three applications simultaneously.

"The Infinity Flex screen is the foundation of tomorrow's smartphone," Denison said.

The folding phones are becoming hotly contested. At least four of Samsung's competitors, including

and Huawei Technologies Co., have applied for patents for folding models. Last week, a small Chinese company, Royole, revealed the world's first folding screen with a 7.8-inch screen that can fold 180 degrees.

A folding graphics card shakes smartphone infrastructure, which has maintained a similar look over a decade. But analysts say that a foldable tablet-sized device could approach $ 2,000, so Samsung executives have admitted that they have to provide persuasive uses to justify a steep price.

However, the folding phone market is small at first: Strategy Analytics predicts that such phones will represent only 1% of all smartphones sold next year and 4% in 2023.

Alexa, Bixby needs outside voice app developers to create functions that Samsung calls to favor "capsules" technology. These capsules, which the Journal reported last week, would give users the chance to play audio tracks for music, order pizza or a taxi.
