The National Academy of Medicine demanded that the administration of Nicolás Maduro be involved in the implementation of the national vaccination plan against open coronavirus. He called for coordination with the country’s scientific and medical clubs.
In his statement, he recalled that, in addition to Sputnik V, negotiations were held on the import of another vaccine procured through the Covax mechanism, “which requires an agreement between the government and the opposition to identify the funds needed to procure and implement it.
“The vaccine under consideration is a vaccine produced by Oxford / AstraZeneca based on a non-replicating adenoviral vector that has been shown to be safe and effective in various clinical trials and is already authorized by the European Medicines Agency.”
Guarantee the necessary doses for vaccination
He explained that this is an appropriate step to ensure the estimated number of doses needed to vaccinate 15 million Venezuelans, which is why we need access to various vaccines.
In this regard, he suggests two aspects for the effective development of a vaccination program:
To ensure uninterrupted demand for vaccinations, Venezuela needs access to a variety of vaccines produced by organizations. As in this situation, said vaccines have been evaluated in the past to ensure their safety and efficacy. Where experimental products are imported, they must be subject to appropriate scientific and ethical scrutiny and the conduct of any research must not cause confusion with the national vaccination program;
the implementation of the vaccination program must be carried out in a single national covid-19 vaccination plan, which must provide a conceptual and functional framework for all vaccines used in the country. Such a plan should be developed in cooperation with the relevant scientific and medical clubs and in consultation with civil society. A key element of the plan is the definition of priority groups for vaccination.
“The National Medical Academy provides advice to the national government and guides the community in such an important role,” he noted.
